Artifact 9 - Drawings
Reinforcing content with visuals is a focus of all ELL classrooms. Whenever possible I assigned homework that allowed the students to produce their own visuals related to the previous day's lesson. The assessment allows the students to draw important concepts and facts covered in class. The assessment is a good way to discern what information students can retain and remember (students do not take their notes home).
During the units on the regions and states I assigned homework that involved drawing a picture of the characteristics of a given state. The students were able to draw pictures of important scenes in New York. The students in the following samples were al able to write sentences describing New York, though some students struggled with this. This assessment allowed the students with poor writing skills to show their understanding of the lessons o New York by drawing, even though they were unable to write a sentence.

Example 1
Example 2
Example 3
The student work in the example 1 shows a student listing important facts emphasized in the lesson. The student work in example 2 shows a student drawing conclusions about the information in the lesson. The student writes that the environment is clean and peaceful, this was not specifically stated in the class but it is a conclusion she could draw from the pictures of New York's forests and mountains. The work in example 3 shows a student writing about the Statue of Liberty. This student emphasizes the symbolism of the statue and how it is important to immigrants. This was not a part of lesson that was particularly emphasized and it shows the student was paying attention to details. Most of the lesson on New York was focused on geographic features such as lakes, rivers, and mountains and features of New York's cities.
